By the end of this course, you’ll have the essential skills of sampling, producing, and arranging hip-hop beats and full tracks down pat. You’ll be starting to look inward at your own voice as a producer, and be equipped with the tools needed to succeed in this new (or perhaps very familiar) space. Specifically, you’ll learn about drums, bass, loops, structures, and sampling techniques, and how to utilize arrangement, harmony, and melody to express your ideas with the production methods to bring them to life.
But such a dismissal would be disrespectful to the medium, and there are plenty of legit reasons to pay tribute to a beloved song by producing a chiptune cover.
Our mentors can give you feedback in all three areas on a weekly basis during the program. They might offer a new perspective on your song based on your intentions, or give you honest feedback about where a piece falls short based on the expectations of the field, if that’s part of your goal. This can help you hone in on where to focus your efforts to make the most progress.
In a song that was spliced together from the independent compositions of different feuding band members, John McVie’s contribution takes prominence here at the end. Played along an E minor scale, it starts with a long A and ascends to the C, before descending via a run of notes to resolution on the E. Simple yet effective, especially with the repetition, it builds up with intensity into a driving tempo over Mick Fleetwood’s drums. But one thing that shouldn’t be overlooked is how much musical tension is created between the bass and the lead guitar as a result of what I call “reverse” pedal point.
Another approach that works for some players is to use the C major scale on those two strings (6th and 5th) to map out the other notes as referential to them. If your aptitude for memorization is quite high, this would be quicker.
There are lots of reasons why tuning is hard. You might be hampered by a poorly made guitar, or by a guitar that’s not set up correctly, or by old, worn-out strings, or by changes in temperature or humidity, or just by a lack of patience or time. At least you can be secure in the knowledge that some of your tuning struggles are due to the basic unfairness of the universe, and not just the limitations of your ears or your equipment.
In his new book Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise, which is excerpted here, Dr. Ericsson and his co-author Robert Pool argue that the best practice habits, what they call “purposeful practice,” involve specific goals, focus, feedback, and leaving your comfort zone; all of which are incorporated into Soundfly’s unique online learning model.
This technique is most widely used as an alternative to the “speeding buildup” technique. Here, the buildup section is supported with a marching snare-type instrument, serving the purpose of increasing the energy right before the chorus or the drop.

We all have trouble staying on top of our goals sometimes. Our program is structured over the course of a month with weekly activities to help you stay accountable to your stated goals over time. Our mentors will check in with you every week to see how your activities are coming and whether you’re making progress toward your goals.
Lyrically, the verse “back ends” coalesce in a cool way, using similar lines and then the same lines — which you could call lazy, but I don’t think you should be smarmy about anything in pop that you don’t see too often. Good going, whichever one of you five Maroony guys crafted this cool little “words-zipper.” My money’s on the tall Gump-cut guy, he seems like he’s going places — he must be a solid dude for all these women to let him sing in their video.
The ability to move up and down the neck of a guitar and understand what your available notes are in any given fret, is something that many guitarists struggle with well into their careers. It takes an effort to commit oneself to learning where all of the notes are and the patterns they create, but that doesn’t mean it has to be difficult to pick up this skill.
You can actually feel the larynx rise in full effect if you put your index finger on your Adam’s Apple and swallow. The front-most portion will literally shift and tilt as the food or liquid goes down!
