What makes Madison so special for touring artists is the diverse nature of its musical culture. With a bubbling scene in everything from classical music to jazz to opera to summer music festivals, and more, Madison is a must stop for touring artists. It’s also home to labels like Crustacean Records and Kind Turkey Records. When it comes to live music, you can catch a show at the High Noon Saloon —named the “Best Venue” by a different organizations including Madison Magazine, the Madison Area Music Awards, and Isthmus — or any number of homey, intimate spaces like Kiki’s House of Righteous Music (shown above).

The great thing about studying pop tunes is that they very rarely stray from a given key. They like to keep things rather diatonic. This means that with just a small bit of practice, you can start to recognize these chord progressions for yourself, even without your instrument in hand. We will go much deeper into our understanding of how these chords function in later articles, but for now let’s just get comfortable with what we get from “Sorry.”

The problem is, a bank doesn’t always see it that way. If they look at your returns and see huge write-offs (even if you made good money), they may see you as a less than ideal applicant. It boils down to banks looking at gross income for W4 earners, and net for 1099 earners — which automatically puts you at a disadvantage.

Farina and Farina Alto serve food you can eat and music you can bob your head to. Though gourmet brick oven pizza may not be a novel concept, Farina executes it flawlessly. Enjoy a bianca pizza and homemade piñon-laced meatballs any night of the week here, while listening to your favorite Radiohead song or classical concerto from Chopin. This place is open until 10pm most nights (which is “late” in NM), so when you’re looking for tunes and a great late night snack, Farina’s is a godsend.
Most importantly: Have fun with it. The chances are you won’t have any huge sponsors in the early stages of a podcast, so use those opening episodes to fine-tune your process and overall sound. Having professional, clean sounding audio will make the difference between listeners taking you seriously and not.
Hip-hop is no different. Your loops and melodies are your main themes, and how you vary them creates excitement and drama in the music. Remember, hip-hop is a minimalist music — less is more.

Similar to social media platforms, it’s easy to get fixated on increasing your total number of likes, followers, or views. While it’s always encouraging to see these numbers go up, the truth is that these are just vanity metrics — or, in other words, things you can measure that, while not completely meaningless, don’t matter all that much in the grand scheme of things.
One of them that’s common in electronic and instrumental music is the development of a single idea over time. It’s also common in dance music, ambient music, and minimal music, and tends to work well with slowly developing sounds or textures. This kind of technique of form is also common in reggae, in certain kinds of West African music, and in East Indian classical music, among others — all musics that attempt to evoke transcendental states and trances while exploring a particular mood or emotional space, and utilize melody and rhythm to drive the song forward.
People often forget that their bodies need them to compensate with fluid intake anytime you increase your physical activity (e.g. during a workout, when dancing, or just any time you sweat a lot). Also, consider what happens when you’re performing on stage under the hot lights: lots of movement, hot rooms, nervousness, which all cause perspiration, so it’s important to plan additional water intake when engaging in these types of activities.
It may sound corny or cliché, it may sound like bad advice at first, but “fake it til you make it” is one of the core tennets of visualizing your success.
By the end of this course, you’ll have the essential skills of sampling, producing, and arranging hip-hop beats and full tracks down pat. You’ll be starting to look inward at your own voice as a producer, and be equipped with the tools needed to succeed in this new (or perhaps very familiar) space. Specifically, you’ll learn about drums, bass, loops, structures, and sampling techniques, and how to utilize arrangement, harmony, and melody to express your ideas with the production methods to bring them to life.
